Refrigerator symptoms, likely causes and what we do

Most refrigerator faults come down to a handful of parts. Here is what each symptom usually means and how the visit goes.

Fridge warm, freezer cold

The evaporator coil is iced over because the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control failed, or the evaporator fan has stopped moving cold air up. We test the defrost circuit and fan, replace the failed part and clear the ice properly rather than letting it thaw over a day.

Both compartments warm

Start relay and overload, condenser fan, dirty condenser coils or the compressor itself. We check the inexpensive parts first and test the compressor before quoting; if the compressor or sealed system has failed on an older fridge we tell you replacement is the better value.

Water inside the fridge or on the floor

A blocked defrost drain, a cracked drain pan, a leaking water inlet valve or a loose ice-maker line. Drain clogs are cleared and the drain heater checked so the problem does not come back.

Ice maker or dispenser stopped

Inlet valve, frozen fill tube, ice maker module, filter housing or a freezer running warmer than minus 18. We confirm the freezer temperature first, because a warm freezer will not make ice however new the module is.

Runs constantly, noisy or cycling

Worn door gaskets, dirty coils, a failing thermistor or a fan bearing. Gaskets and a coil clean are quick fixes that also cut the running cost.

Built-in or counter-depth unit

Sub-Zero, Thermador, Gaggenau, Bosch and Miele built-ins are serviced in place or on their rails, with the cabinet panel refitted and the unit levelled. Tell us the model so we can check parts availability before the visit.

Repair or replace?

Fan, defrost, gasket, relay, drain and ice-maker repairs are worth doing at almost any age. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor on a fridge past ten or twelve years usually is not, and we say so before any work starts. Either way you get a fixed quote first and pay only the diagnostic if you decide not to proceed.

Common questions
about appliance repair

If your fridge isn’t cold yet the freezer is working fine, it is a typical issue often caused by frosted evaporator coils, malfunctioning damper controls, or malfunctioning evaporator fans.

A leaking refrigerator should be fixed immediately to prevent water damage to your home. We inspect the water inlet valve, defrost drain, and water filtration system.

Strange noises often indicate fan blades grinding against ice buildup or a malfunctioning condenser fan.

A malfunctioning temperature control sensor (thermostat) or thermistor is often the reason a fridge begins freezing food.

Freezer temperatures higher than -12C (10F) will prevent ice production. Ideally, your freezer should be between -14 to -18C.

Dirty condenser coils, faulty door gaskets, or thermostat issues can cause your fridge to work overtime.

The technician that came to check on my broken freezer, Ilya, was very knowledgeable, experienced, and professional, and I would definitely return to this company if I have future appliance issues. Through the initial consultation over the phone, it was immediately clear that Ilya was very knowledgeable and experienced based on the questions he asked and what he was able to deduce just based on the information provided him. He was able to come check my fridge on the day of on very short notice, and spent much time dismantling my fridge to get a proper diagnose of the underlying issue (not just the problem at face value), whereas the company I previously reached out to before switching to Edellin had only looked at the fridge for a few minutes and gave a very vague diagnosis. The previous company (appliance repair expert, they are scammers, do not use their services) never contacted me after I paid the home visit fee, even though they said they would send someone to repair my fridge later, and was unresponsive when I called or emailed. On the other hand, Ilya was very honest with me that fixing my fridge was possible but not worth it, as the fridge was quite old and the repairs and part replacements would cost more than half the cost of getting a new fridge of the same model. He also provided a contact to an appliance company that would be able to give me a discount for a new fridge. The man moved like he’d been fixing fridges since the invention of ice cubes. Two hours later my fridge was back from the dead, purring like a happy cat.
